Why do I have a message hung up in send

I sent a message and probably did something wrong and it is sitting in send for hours

There's could be a number of reasons but usually connection is the main one. If it's an iMessage press it so you can select the option of sending as text. You may also wasn't to try resetting your phone if that doesn't work.
