screen came up to enter password, would not allow password and could not get screen to change, screen went black and cannot tell if on, off, or ?

First step place the iPhone in charge for about 5-10 minutes just in case its a battery issue. Second, try a RESET (does NOT delete anything) where you press and hold both the home and power button for about 15 seconds. If still nothing on the screen, you can try putting your iPhone into recovery mode (this will do a RESTORE which does delete everything and requires a computer with iTunes on it).
