Welcome to iMore! Are you looking for an ad blocker or an antivirus? I've never found antivirus software necessary for Mac but that's up to you. If you're looking for something to block ads, AdBlock is a popular choice.

That's odd. Have never used an antivirus in almost 15 years. Whatever browser you use, I would clear the browser history and cache and then install AdBlock like @DevilishBanker suggested. And then stay away from those sites that caused the pop ups.

I keep my antivirus in a drawer. It was a gift.
