Why aren't my old messages coming through?

Old messages are not coming through

The background to my situation is my iphone wifi stopped working, I was able to perform a backup to icloud just before however.

I did not have whatsapp for approx 1-2 months.

When I finally had a new iphone, i expected any messages from when my phone last received up until the present to be automatically downloaded to my phone however this was not the case.

I first tried not to restore my chat sessions which did not pull down my messages, and then I tried to restore my messages which the old ones were restored from my backup however not the ones inbetween.

any advice?
