Why won't my volume control buttons mute the ringer?

Volume control buttons will not mute ringer

Buttons will allow screen to go to last square but will not mute

Welcome to iMore! If you want to mute, why not turn off the ringer switch above the volume buttons? Also, maybe sounds are turned up elsewhere. Check Settings >Sounds. Also pull up the control center screen and turn sound down there.

If muting your ringer is for night time use you can configure Do Not Disturb which is a better option
