Why do I sometimes get a gray bar & microphone when texting?

Sometimes when I am texting I get a gray bar with a microphone and it appears in all people I am texting the only way I get rid of it is to turn my phone off. has anyone else had this problem? I do not know what I hit

That is the voice memo function in iMessage. I've read that others have had it get stuck while they were trying to use it, but were able to remedy the issue by closing out iMessage and then reopening it (vs. completely restarting the phone itself). I would imagine there is some kind of fix to it getting "stuck" coming in a future firmware...thankfully I haven't experienced it yet on my 6S Plus (but did on my 6 Plus when I updated it to iOS 9).

It's the audio text feature. It's activicated by pressing the mic on the right side. Try swiping the messages app out of multitasking. That works.

I had it, yeah.
Rebooting my device did the job (thanks to the  Genius Bar).
