What are you device specs? If possible, increasing the RAM will get you the biggest bang for your buck, up to a point. As Keith said, Peter Cohen has some excellent articles on the iMore blog.

If you really want to supercharge your machine...install an SSD and run the OS and major apps off of it. It's the best modification I've ever made to my machines. There is no comparison on any other upgrade in terms of speed...if your computer has a normal HDD for OS duties, an SSD will make it feel like you injected it with steroids.
