And if the US media were doing it's once "traditional" job... they'd be going after answers as to why this is being done. Instead, they're running cover... for everything that's going on right now... IRS, Benghazi...

This will not be a political bash thread. Still to the tech part of the topic.

Governments around the world do stuff way worse than this to keep track on citizens. If the gov't reading my emails and texts keeps a plane from flying into a building, then by all means. Read away.

If their rationale for doing this become acceptable then being able to stop and frisk anybody at anytime under the guise of public safety will have to be acceptable.

Turns out Verizon's 'Test Man' & 'Can you hear me now' were just systems checks for government surveillance...

Just to play devil's advocate here for a bit . . . we are upset that the govt accesses our data in an attempt to protect national security interests, but we don't mind handing it over to the likes of google, facebook, et. al. in the first place? I may not always trust the govt, but I trust zuckerberg and page even less. Just wondering . . .

Dennis Miller tweeted the other day that while this was very a disconcerting issue, on the bright side, at least we all get unlimited free mobile-to-government minutes.

The Verizon thing is way, way beyond the targeted collection of data or persons of interest in national security.... the data collected from Verizon is/was essentially the call logs of every call on verizon's network - originating & destination phone numbers, length of call, time of day the call was made... I trust government even less than you & I trust Facebook...

With Google, Facebook, et. al., we KNOW what they are doing IF we take time to read through the Terms of Service. The real issue is that there are no ToS for the government... and we have an expectation of privacy in our personal communications. That is the difference - a huge difference, IMHO.
