Default Selling 4S to person in Africa: is this possible?!

Just upgraded to the iPhone 5 and now have an idle 4S. I know someone who is from Africa and says people she knows in her country will buy anything Apple. (She was also able to sell my HP Touchpad a few months ago for a nice profit.)

But I have no idea if this is possible. If a mobile phone is from a US carrier and is not unlocked, it is worth anything to someone abroad? If it must be unlocked, how does one go about unlocking it? Sorry, but I'm new to the unlocking issue--I've always had a carrier smartphone and never worried about it etc.

    Thanks!

If you just upgraded to the 5, and you are an AT&T customer, they will unlock your 4S with just a phone call. Then you can send it off to Africa and sell for a tidy profit.

I'm sorry, Alli, but I mistakenly assumed y'all would assume I have a Sprint iPhone because this is a Sprint forum.

Anyway, yes, I have a Sprint phone.

My bad. I wasn't paying attention to the forum. In that case, you can still unlock for a non-US SIM by contacting Sprint. Africa does have a few CDMA carriers, and they may be willing to provision a phone meant for another network - unlike our US CDMA carriers.

I called Sprint and asked to speak regarding international plans. I asked if it was possible for them to unlock the phone so I can use a prepaid SIM card since the 4S is a world phone. They submitted a request to Apple and told me to wait 24 hours. Then after that time period, plug it into iTunes and restore (instructions were emailed to me). It will then say iPhone activated after completing the process. I sold my phone to someone in Central America and they have no issues using their carrier (GSM) with their own SIM card.

I don't think this would be possible with CDMA carriers in other countries, only GSM.
