iPhone on the Sprint Employee Referral Plan
Disclaimer: I work for Sprint, but I am in IT not retail or sales. I get NOTHING for doing this but the satisfaction of giving people with similar interests as me a great deal. I have been very active on Pre Central, Android Central, and XDA Developers as Nextelian for years and have a very good reputation. I'm not here to sell you anything, I'm here to give you something.
The Sprint iPhone (both the 4 and 4S) will be available on the Everything Plus Referral Plan (formally known as SERO). You get a $10 a month discount and 50 extra minutes. It's not a huge amount of money, but when you consider that you also get unlimited data it could end up saving you a lot of money over time.

I had a SERO plan back when I was on Sprint. My parents are still on Sprint and have SERO plans. Maybe now they can switch to the iPhone!

It's just another plan. If you are already a Sprint customer I'm not sure if you can take advantage of it. I'm no specialist, but I'm pretty sure its for new customers. You could always try it and see. There is no charge or obligation for looking, the portal just takes you to a special store for employee referrals.

Ok, here's the catch, you can't port a Sprint number to a Sprint account. This is technically for new customers. You could port your number to google voice, since Sprint is completely integrated with GVoice, and then play the swap around game with your new number? Not sure how well this would work. Wish I could be more helpful.

do you think they 16g will be available on the website when they restock on friday? the wording kind of concerns me "available in stores on oct 14"

I'm not sure, its all very secretive. It looks as though only a handful of phones were slated for pre-order, and there is a supply that is marked for the main release. But like you said, it may only be in stores. Apple loves the videos of people waiting in line at the stores showing up on the evening news. It reinforces the impression that there is incredible demand for the iPhone.

I've been on Verizon for years and am not considering leaving them due to being on a family share plan, but that's awesome that Sprint allows you to do that. If I were in the market for a new service provider, that would definitely influence my decision.

are you quitting or something? like, is there any reason you're doing this other than to be a nice guy? i mean, i'm not complaining, you're doing god's work here, but won't these plans go away if you leave?
