Cancel data plan after upgrade?

Ok so my dad has no data plan but his contract is expired. I renewed mine recently. So if i use his upgrade to get the iphone 4, will i have to pay for the data plan for the duration of 2 years? As far as i remember, you can cancel the data plan after 30 days without paying a cancellation fee.

if you get an iPhone you must keep a data package for as long as you use the phone. All AT&T smartphones as of September 2009 require a data plan, no exceptions.

You can upgrade your dad's line and then cancel the data on your dad's line and then have them put the iphone data to your line.
