My otter box defender case protector screen has been taken off but now the touch screen won't work

i have a otterbox defender case for my iPhone 7 the screen protector had came loose on the case so I took it off completely but now the touch screen round the edges of the iPhone won't work while the case is on but works fine when the case is off any ideas what this is amd why it's happening and how to fix it

I have never had a Defender but know plenty who have, and a bunch that took the screen protector off without issues. Is there anything stuck around the edge that might be touching it? Is any of the edge blocking your access to the touch surface?
