How do I change the primary Apple ID to two personal Apple IDs on my iMac?

My wife and I share our iMac. The iMac has a shared Apple ID.

We both have Apple IDs for our email addresses synced to our iPhones.

Given the syncing issues we are having, I want to set up our two Apple IDs on the iMac and remove the shared Apple ID. Additionally, how do I ensure that I preserve any files and photos from the shared Apple iCloud account and transfer them to our personal Apple iCloud accounts?

1. What is the shared Apple ID on the iMac used for? Purchases?
2. Do have separate "login" credentials on the iMac?
3. What do you mean when you say "we both have Apple IDs for our email addresses? Are you saying that you both have Apple IDs in the form of email addresses?
