my iphone 5 was not in use for a year and it wont open.

when i start to charge my ipone5, the apple icon appeared on the screen for 5 seconds and as i continue to chargeit, the itune logo appears on the screen with an arrow pointing at he itune logo at the middle. what should i do to be able to use again my iphone? is it already defective?
