First iCloud Backup from iPhone

I tried backing up my 7 Plus to iCloud for the first time last night. Admittedly, the backup is going to be huge as I have a lot of stuff on it.

Question: for the first backup, does iCloud have to do the entire backup in one shot? Alternatively, can iCloud do the first backup in chunks over a couple days?

From my experience iCloud doesn't allow a partial backup. If you use iCloud Drive the supported apps will update the data when you finish using the app
