i want to tether my iphone 5 to my work pc to use as a modem,how do i do this

Not sure how a wired tether works. Why don't you use the hotspot function on the phone.The phone can then be seen as a wifi network and you can use the phone's data on your computer.

Enable hotspot function on your iPhone, connect your iPhone with the Lightning cable to the computer and make sure you have iTunes installed on it.
This will make your iPhone function as a hotspot.
