What is best extra storage device

What is the best thumb drive type device for getting extra storage? I'm looking at iklips, sandisk iexpand and others so I can download files, photos, and music onto it from my desktop and then access them on my ipad or iPhone. All seem to have some negative reviews so thought I would see what others here are using.

Wouldn't it be easier to simply connect the iPad or iPhone to your desktop and download the files directly?

I have limited storage on my ipad so want to use the thumb drive to essentially expand available storage.

Using cloud services like Dropbox, OneDrive, Evernote, iCloud may be helpful to you in this regard. Anyway, I hope members who use physical storage options like the ones you mentioned will reply soon....
