Why are only the top half of pictures showing up?

When I get a text picture from someone lately only the top portion of the picture is showing up and the rest of the picture is solid grey. This has happened more than once and from different people. Help!

This mainly occurs when the photo is corrupted. I did a google search of this query but I'm not able to find any suitable answer.
Some people could resolve this by updating their OS though!

Anything in common among the senders? Are they all on the same carrier, using/not using iMessage, using Android phones, etc?
