What exactly is the thunderbolt port used for? I've looked it up but still highly confused

It's a port that allows you to connect different devices that have thunderbolt cables or by using an adapter. You would also use it to charge your MacBook.

Okay, that's what I thought but with the release of the new MacBook Pro, I was confused on the terms "Thunderbolt" and "USB-C" Thanks
