iCloud account on old iPhone

My iPhone recently suffered a catastrophic breakdown. I have now purchased a new one and moved the Sim card from the old to the new. Is the iCloud account still active on the old phone? I need to ascertain this before sending the old phone to a company that recycles them.

On a computer, log in to icloud.com. Go to Find iPhone. Select that device. Select "Erase Device". Note that if the device is not active, this probably will not work.

Then, go to appleid.apple.com. Select that device. Select "Remove iPhone".
