iCloud email address

New to iOS. So, I'm just wondering what advantage their is to creating and @icloud email address? I would like to take advantage of everything iOS offers, but having a hard time seeing the point.
Also, if I created one, is it possible, like iOS mail, to limit the outgoing name to just the first name?

With the exception of superb syncing with your Apple products, it's just another email account.
