How does new "AI" for photos on iOS device work when switching devices?

The changes to Apple Photos with iOS10 include new AI similar to what is offered with Google Photos, with the main difference being the AI is performed on the device locally.

What happens to all of the AI (recognized people for example) when a user switches/upgrades their device? Is all of the AI lost?

I believe that if you do a backup, it will be saved. But I haven't personally tried it yet
