Default Take contact off do not disturb

Is there a way to take a contact off of do not disturb without necessarily having to send them another text message just so I can toggle the feature off?

Not that I'm aware of, but I'm assuming the iMessage conversation with that particular contact has been deleted.

If there is no existing thread for that contact, then Do Not Disturb should not be on for that contact.

Do you mean "Leave this Conversation" on iMessage?

In my experience if the contact is on do not disturb and you delete the message thread then the contact is still silenced and I won't get any notifications concerning them. I don't notice any other way to turn the do not disturb option off for the contact unless either I send them a brand new text message or they message me and then I go into the existing message thread and toggle the do not disturb button off.
