iPhone 3 won't activate

This is a new phone I set up just for texting. Fairly new at this.
Has no sim.
imessage is on, I haveSMS on anyway in case I get one.
MMS is on.
It is on in the imessage window waiting for activation for an hour now.
Have I missed a setting??
I do have wireless and it is connected.

To activate iMessage without a SIM card you will have to enable iMessage using your Apple ID.

I do have an apple id, but something is wrong there.
I type in the password when prompted, the box in the screen gives a little wiggle and nothing happens.
I believe it is not accepting the password.
I am going to start over with a new apple ID.

Instead of making a new Apple ID, resetting your password might help.
Wiggling screen means you're entering the wrong password.
