Why doesn't the keyboard pop up when I want to type?

Sometimes when I want to send a message chat on WhatsApp the keyboard doesn't pop up. It may be related to the "paste" cache. The only way I can get the keyboard to return is to send the pasted message, and then the keyboard returns. What can I do?
