How do I change my Apple ID @ the I-tunes store?

I changed my internet provider to charter.

I have changed my Apple ID to reflect the new provider.
EX: ........@charter.net

but I-tunes store does not recognize this.

Someone said if I change my Apple ID @ the I-Tunes store I would lose all my music!
Is this true?
