I was told to backup my iPad with iCloud so I won't lose data while restoring. How?

My iPad keeps leaving screen I'm on and going back to desktop. I was told to reset it to factory. Also told me to back up as to not lose data with iCloud. Also is there anything else I can do to fix problem without losing data

1. Connect your iOS device to a Wi-Fi network. Go to Settings > iCloud > Backup, turn on iCloud Backup, then tap Back up Now.

2. To verify the backup, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, then tap your device name below Backups. The latest backup is listed with a timestamp and backup size.

If you have issues, you might want to restore as new. Not from a back up. The problem may be in the back up.
