Why does the Mail app display an unread mail count, but then doesn't display the unread mail?

the icon for mail has indicated number of emails but when i click the mail icon, only blank screen appears. When i log in from my laptop it works, but not from my iPhone 6.
I tried deleting the account and re register but did not help the problem. Also, have shut off phone multiples times.

Are you connected to the Internet when you attempt to view your email messages?
