Is using LTE to surf the web safe?

I

iMore Question

If I'm using my phone in a public place that has unlocked wi-fi. And I us my phone on it's LTE net work connection (Verizon) and I don't connect to the open wi-fi connection. A'm I as safe. Is the LTE connection as good as a VPN? Can I use the open wi-fi with a VPN and be safe? Other words, is the LTE on my phone as good as a VPN or do I need both?

LTE connection is provided to you by your carrier and it's broadcasted to you by the air signals via cell towers. Depend on the level of security you want to have on LTE, I wouldn't say that LTE on it self is a secure medium as you carrier can read your data exchange content if needed to. If you want to get a complete privacy, VPN is the way to go.
Same for the unlocked wifi, which is way more unsecure than LTE.
To sum up top security first
1.) VPN over LTE
2.) VPN over unlocked Wifi
3.) LTE
4.) unlocked Wifi

Ariel, thanks as that is exactly what I wanted to know. I'm going to get Tunnel Bear or Express VPN. I connect to my bank and stock accounts and was worried that even the LTE connection could be hacked. Again thanks to all that replied.
