We have 2 iPad 2's used mostly by our children, 3 & 6 years, for streaming.

The iPads is running iOS 8.x but is kinda laggy, will updating reduce lag? are there other things worth updating for? (if it does not increase lag.)

YMMV, however I have heard in more than one instance that people have noticed a speed and battery improvement after updating to iOS 9.3 on such devices. Do some Google searching and see what other people have done. Before you do this though, make sure you do an iCloud backup or computer backup of both devices so you dont lose data. Another thing to keep in mind is after you update to 9.3, you cannot downgrade to anything earlier as Apple has stopped signing earlier iOS revisions.

Why would you stay at iOS 8 anyway? 9 is much better. They removed many of the bugs from 8. IOS 9 is faster and smoother. And there's always security patches in updates.
