Why is my iPhone 4S not authorizing?

Friend gave me a 4S do not want to use it as a phone but just for Gmail texting and FaceTime Gmail works fine but texting and FaceTime after I enter my login and password keeps saying waiting for authorization went to Apple they're not sure what's wrong?
