If you are both using the same Apple ID it is most liking what is causing your contact list to be the same. Get separate ID's and it should solve your problem.

And keep in mind you can set up separate Apple ID and still share an iTunes account for apps, music, etc. iOS will handle each individually.

Agreed. Use two separate accounts and then have a look into using Family Share to see if it would benefit the two of you.
