Contacts entered recently do not show up in my contact list, what is wrong?

Older contacts are shown but any that I've entered in the last year do not show. In addition, it looks like there is a little phone up in the right hand corner near the battery percentage indicator. Is there anything I can do so that I can find my newly entered contacts in the contact list?

Initiate the native Contacts app, select "Groups", and then make sure everything listed therein has a checkmark next to it.
