How do I change the calendar on my Iphone to view the events right on the month

Yesterday I put in a number of events on my calendar that just were typed the space for that day of the month. When I tapped the on the day, it turned gray and then allowed you to type in the event, which showed up right on the face of the month that I pulled up, without having to tap the day with a dot and then see the event. Today I just opened the calendar on my phone and it only gave me the option of tapping the dots to see or enter any events. I want to be able to see the month with the events showing on each day that has an event. What do I do to change that?
