Why won't iTunes play songs from my installed backup iTunes Library?

new laptop windows 10 and iTunes v12.3.2.35. have installed backed up library from external hdd. all albums (573 albums 36GB) visible in iTunes but will not play any songs as original file cannot be found. iTunes file path points to iTunes media on my c: drive. Any ideas?? thanks. Colin.
