I have an Apple Watch but an older iPhone. A friend has an iPhone 5, can I sync to their phone?

Can I sync my Apple Watch to someone else's phone if they have adifferent apple account

You must have access to a compatible iPhone in order to pair an  watch to an iPhone

You can certainly pair your watch to your friend's iPhone 5 but you must be near your friend's phone for anything to push to your watch and, even then, all of your friend's notifications and alerts will be pushed to your Apple Watch, not your own. Not very realistic or useful, even if your friend's phone is compatible with your watch.
