Why does AirPlay freezes on Apple TV when the phone's screen sleeps?

When I stream a video using Safari and use AirPlay to broadcast it on my Apple TV, it freezes when my iPad screen sleeps. Is there a work around other than turning off sleep? I am using iOS 9.1 and the new Apple TV.

It's been a while since I streamed a video using Safari and AirPlay, but I recall it being hit or miss when my iPhone's screen would blacken. I'll test it out later and get back to you.
