Is there another way to open the control center on an ipad than swiping up from the bottom. Our students have large cases and we can get the control center to open by swiping up. The cover comes over the screen a little too far.

Yes, you can use Assistive Touch on Accessibility.
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch and toggle on. An on screen button will appear.
Tap the button and get this.
Tap Control Center and it pops right up.
If you tap "device", get these options:
Tap "more" and get these, including screenshot.
To hide the onscreen button, triple tap the home button. Again to bring the button back.
