My notes on my iPhone 5s disappeared. why and how do i get them back?

My notes aren't paired with any of my email accounts, and i don't have iCloud. When i click on "Settings" on my phone, and proceed to the notes toggle, my default account is "from my mac". Im wondering; A.) what happened and B.) can i retrieve the notes through my mac since it says that's the default?

any help will suffice!!

I assume you sync your device via iTunes on your Mac. If so, I assume those notes are restorable by restoring a recent iTunes backup. As for why they disappeared from your iPhone 5S, I do not know.
