Why is my iPhone detected, but grayed out in iTunes under devices?

My iPhone comes up when I click on devices with iTunes open but is grey and won't let me click it. It doesn't pop up on iTunes so I can't add music or anything. It doesn't come up as devices connected but it charges.

Are you using a Windows PC? Do you have an anti-virus app scanning attached devices? If so, give it time to complete the scan.
