My photos disappeared when I selected iCloud photo library

I got a new iPhone 6 and the iCloud Photo Library sounded like a good option. When I selected it, all my photos vanished. They are not in the photos app - it says I have no photos or video. Are they gone? For real?

I lost 9,000 pictures that way. haven't gotten them back...

mine are completely gone. this happened when I updated to iOS 8.3
