How to bypass the sim lock?!

My Uncle gave me an iphone 5 and it didn't have a sim card. I rested the phone and erased everything to make it brand new . Now when i try to activate it, it will not unlock unless i have a sim card? I am going to at&t tomorrow to get a sim card. is that the best solution or is there a way i can unlock it without it ? please help!
