If your device has a wireless data plan and is activated on a wireless carrier's network, you should be all set to send and receive SMS, MMS, and email messages. If you've enabled iMessages, and are connected to the internet either via Wi-FI or cellular data then you should be able to send and receive iMessages. Having said that, you need to contact your wireless carrier. They may be able to troubleshoot from their end.
