How does a MacBook Air used as a desktop computer (with an external monitor) compare with an I-Mac?

iMore Question

I am ready to make the move from windows to mac. I don't want to invest in both a desktop and laptop if I can avoid. My needs are rather business basic: composition, spreadsheets, pdfs, internet (nothing exotic or demanding like gaming or video). Does it sound like a MacBook Air with external monitor, keyboard, and mouse be sufficient? I know nothing about Mac and my only exposure is thru the Iphone 6+ which is truly extraordinary. I will appreciate any feedback you can offer. thank you kindly.

A MacBook Air would be fine for your needs; however, if you don't need the portability of a laptop, an iMac might be a better choice for you. I really like my 27-inch iMac.

I'm using am 23" Lenovo external monitor with my MacBook Air connected with a Thunderbolt / HDMI adapter cable.
I use it with the lid closed.
Really great.
Cost of monitor and adapter total was about $220 (Best Buy)
Good Luck
