How do I upload old iPhoto and other photos to iCloud from an external drive?

I have about 60 gigs of old photos on an external drive and another ~20 gig iPhoto library. My mba is only 64 gb. How do I get the photos to my iCloud library so I can access them anytime?

Transfer a few to your MBA and then upload them to your iCloud Photo Library. Afterwards, delete the transferred pics from your MBA, and then repeat the process with a few more. Do this until all of your pics have been uploaded.
