I just tested with Wi-Fi on the iPhone turned off. As long as I'm in Bluetooth range, if the iPhone receives a message, that message is sent to the watch.

What about with no wifi? Will it receive the message just off regular network no data?

If his carrier sends SMS messages to his phone now, without a data plan, then I "assume" he would get them on the watch via Bluetooth. . . . It would be nice if someone else could test, too.

Yah I'm frustrated because I can't test. No watch.

In regard to SMS messages, your Watch can receive them as long as the iPhone can receive them AND the Watch is connected to the iPhone via Bluetooth. In regard to iMessages, the answer is "No" under the circumstances you've stated. The Watch is not independent of the iPhone in this regard.

If the iPhone can receive the message then the connected Watch can receive them. The Watch is not independent of the iPhone in this regard.
