why can i not stream video since my yosemite upgrade. safari is using up to 3gb of my 4gb ram ?!!

when i am streaming video from a website in safari it is using up to 3gb of my ram and the video cannot stream continuously. my macbook air is less than 1 year old and now since upgrading from OS X mavericks to yosemite only 1 week ago i cannot stream video at all without pauses and eventually me shutting down. i am at my wits end this was never the case before yosemite - everything worked perfectly - please advise asap how i can rectify this - its unacceptable!
