Why can't my iMac upgrade beyond OS X 10.6?

I have an iMac8,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz machine. its running on Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I am not being able to update further to Ver 10.6, and iTunes too does not upgrade. what do i do? has my Mac become obsolete or something... what the hell is going on??? Please advise anyone. How o i upgra furthr?
