Why can't I get into my email

keeps showing"no messages selected" but icon shows 49 email waiting to be read

Why can't I get into my email

What device are you using? Are you using the stock mail app on iPhone? Which email provider? Gmail, outlook, Yahoo? Can you show a screenshot? Have you tapped on an email to open it?
You might try deleting the email account, then enter it back in.
