Why is the image on my TV in portrait mode and not in landscape mode?

I am assuming you're using AirPlay with an Apple TV. If so, if you are "mirroring" a photo or something, it will appear as it does on your device. If you're watching a video, "some" do not require mirroring and will indeed display over the entire TV screen. Have you tried turning your device to landscape and seeing if the image does the same on the TV?
